Golf scoops Caravan Club’s Towcar of the Year award

The Volkswagen Golf has scooped the Caravan Club’s Towcar of the Year Award – seeing off ough competition from executive saloons and some of the most sophisticated 4x4s on the British market. The Golf .0 TDI SE took the £16,000 – £20,000 category and went on to win the overall title in a field of 28 contenders from leading manufacturers such as Land Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. The new Golf continues the tre d towards more affordable, less thirsty towcars. It’s the third consecutive year in which a two-wheel-drive car has emerged on top – following victories by the Skoda Superb last year and the Ford Mondeo in 2007.

Skoda’s Superb was again among the front-runners, this year taking the title for All-Wheel Drive Vehicles Under 1800kg. Conducted at the Millbrook Test Facility in Bedfordshire over three intensive days of evaluation, the Towcar of the Year awards use two separate panels of judges and put each of the contenders through a rigorous test regime. Four ‘caravanability’ judges examined each vehicle’s practicality as a towcar, together with its load capacity, before six driving judges took to the track to put the ars through their paces with appropriately matched tourers. Each driving judge completed a demanding route around Millbrook’s hill circuit including two hillstarts, an emergency stop and some challenging bends designed to test each car to the limit.
