The new Golf has beaten off stiff competition from rivals to come top in a What Car? group test.

New Golf VI wins January 2009 What Car? Group test with 5 stars

In the January 2009 issue of What Car?, the new sixth-generation Golf is tested in five-door, 2.0 TDI SE form against an Audi A3 Sportback 2.0 TDI, a BMW 118d ES and a Honda Civic 2.2 i-CTDI ES.

In the test, What Car? said it was looking for "fun yet comfortable driving manners, a classy cabin and decent practicality… low running costs are a must, too."

The new Golf equalled or bettered its rivals in every aspect of the test, earning it the kind of gushing praise that will no doubt have Wolfsburg engineers blushing.

"Volkswagen believes in evolution, not revolution, and it's a policy that has worked brilliantly in the new Golf. By retaining the best bits of the previous model and making the rest of the car a whole lot better, it's created one of the most complete cars we can think of.

"It's the winner here - and by a big margin. It has the quality and image to match its prestige-badge rivals, yet it's better to drive, more refined and cheaper than any of them. Put simply, the Golf is a pleasure to spend time in: it’s quiet, comfortable and effortless to drive, but you can still have fun when you’re in the mood. Solid residual values and a practical cabin seal the deal."
