Touareg BlueMotion: fewer emissions, the same great abilities

The new Touareg BlueMotion, which is now available to order, emits just 219g/km from its 25PS 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, thanks to a raft of measures designed to make it as efficient as possible without compromising on ability or comfort. These include:

  • High-efficiency alternator
  • Higher axle ratio
  • Lower drag coefficient
  • Brake energy recuperation
  • Low-rolling-resistance tyres

Lowering the suspension by 25mm helps the Touareg BlueMotion slip through the air, cutting drag and lowering fuel consumption. Brake energy recuperation feeds the battery, meaning there's less work for the new high-efficiency alternator to do, reducing the load on the engine and cutting fuel consumption further. A higher axle ratio makes for a lower engine speed on the move, and low-rolling-resistance tyres mean keeping moving requires the minimum of effort.

Not that the Touareg BlueMotion is short of what it takes to get going, mind: along with 225PS, it produces 550Nm of torque from just 2000rpm; making progress effortless, even when towing up to 3500kg. Leave the horsebox behind and the Touareg BlueMotion will hit 62mph from rest in 8.5 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 126mph.

There's no compromise on equipment, either. As standard, the Touareg BlueMotion comes with cruise control, a leather multifunction steering wheel and 17-inch Makalu alloys. The Touareg SE BlueMotion adds a host of luxury equipment to that tally, including 18-inch Valley alloys, Cricket leather upholstery, Walnut wood trim, 2Zone electronic climate control, touchscreen DVD sat-nav and heated front seats.

The Touareg BlueMotion's reduced emissions mean that it qualifies for band K road tax at £215 a year, saving £190 a year over the VED for the 240PS 3.0 V6 TDI. Add in the improved fuel economy, which makes for savings of 2p per mile, or £10.99 a tank, and the Touareg BlueMotion will save the average driver around £400 a year.

The major growth area in the SUV sector is the sub 225g/km with over a third of executive SUVs sold in the UK having emissions below this level. The new Touareg BlueMotion makes sure that they can now choose a Volkswagen, enabling us to increase our performance with this important car.
